A product manager's abilities can be divided into Professional Ability and Comprehensive Ability. Professional Ability includes role-specific skills like user research, requirements management, and product execution, forming the visible "tip of the iceberg." Comprehensive Ability encompasses softer skills such as collaboration, communication, planning, emotional intelligence, and creativity, which are critical for success but less visible.
Professional Ability has three levels:
Junior PM: Focuses on execution, handling specific features or smaller products.
Senior PM: Manages product lines, plans product architecture, and trains teams.
Product Director/VP: Develops product strategies, identifies business opportunities, and builds product portfolios.
Beyond product-specific skills, PMs need knowledge in project management, operations, technology, and design to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
To develop these skills, deliberate practice is key:
Find a mentor or emulate a role model to guide your growth.
Create mental models and apply them through consistent practice.
Continuously seek feedback and integrate learning into daily work.
